Selection of wood materials eg cedar redwood pressuretreated pine Crum Lynne, Pennsylvania

Selecting the appropriate wood material for a project is a crucial decision that affects the durability, aesthetic, and overall success of any construction or design endeavor. In Crum Lynne, Pennsylvania, where climatic conditions can vary from hot summers to cold winters, it's important to choose a wood that can withstand such fluctuations. Three popular choices are cedar, redwood, and pressure-treated pine.

Cedar is renowned for its natural beauty and resistance to decay. Its aromatic oils deter pests, making it an excellent choice for outdoor applications like decking or fencing. The warm tones of cedar add a rustic charm that blends seamlessly with natural surroundings. However, while cedar is durable and resistant to rotting, it is softer than other woods and may be prone to dents and scratches.

Redwood stands out for its stunning deep-red hue and exceptional resistance to moisture due to the presence of tannins. This type of wood is highly sought after for outdoor structures because it naturally resists warping and splitting when subjected to the elements. Redwood also has superior longevity but tends to come at a higher cost compared to other materials.

Pressure-treated pine is often selected as a more economical option without compromising too much on durability. Treated under high pressure with preservatives that penetrate deep into the wood fibers, this material becomes resistant to rotting and insect damage. Pressure-treated pine can therefore endure harsh weather conditions quite well but requires regular maintenance such as staining or sealing to extend its lifespan.

In conclusion, when choosing among cedar, redwood, or pressure-treated pine in Crum Lynne, consider factors such as budget constraints alongside environmental resistance requirements. Each wood presents unique characteristics catering to different needs—from the luxurious appearance of redwood to the practical affordability of pressure-treated pine—ensuring there's an ideal option no matter what your project entails.

Angi provided me with several contractors, I received estimates but chose Philz Landscaping (even after coming in higher) because he satisfied with his estimate and start date our fervent desire to complete the project before winter set in. Alex, Javier set the example of professionalism in setting up the area to remove fencing and gate, installed vinyl fence with double gate (assisted by Carlos), removed all debris, left my yard spotless and we are extremely satisfied with the new fence and gate. Questions we had were answered (Helena, Phil) promptly and Alex, Javier went above and beyond ensuring my wife’s concerns were taken care of; I want again to Thank the team at Philz Landscaping and recommend highly to perform your project.

Had Phil and his workers come by my house to work on the backyard in May this year. Eliminate weeds, regrade soil and replant grass seed. 158 feet worth of backyard which he estimated $1600 to do. There was a hiccup with his office and scheduling and he wasn't even aware of the set date in mid-May. He rescheduled for the week after and took off $100 for inconvenience. His crew shows up and does the job and weeks after, grass grew....but not fully in corners of the yard. I called him back, voicemail immediately. Got in touch with his office and they said they would pass the message. His response times are atrocious and I told him about the patches in the grass. He says "no problem I'll send guys to evaluate and re-seed". They show up and do the job again. By mid-July, weeds are growing in very strong and grass is dying at exceedingly high rate despite me watering. I called him back and he says "that's odd, I'll come by this afternoon or tomorrow" in September when I finally get a hold of him. He never shows up or responds to texts or further calls. The photos below are post-lawn work with visible patches and weeds. I had to spend additional monies on top soil, grass seed and water to correct the loss of 50% of the lawn!! If you want an overpriced job not done right, Phil is your guy!!

Philz Landscaping built 2 patios on my property. One is flagstone and the other is pavers with a retaining wall. Both are absolutely beautiful. Working with Phil and his team has been a great experience. I highly recommend this company to anyone looking for reliability, quality, and reasonable pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cedar is known for its natural beauty and resistance to decay and insects, making it a durable option for fencing; however, it can be more expensive than other woods. Redwood shares similar qualities to cedar, offering a rich color with high resistance to decay and pests but at an even higher cost. Pressure-treated pine is a more affordable choice that has been chemically treated to resist rot, decay, and termites; though its less visually appealing than cedar or redwood and may not last as long if not properly maintained.
The humid continental climate of Crum Lynne can subject wood fences to harsh conditions like humidity in summer and cold winters. Cedar contains natural oils that make it resistant to moisture and less prone to warping or shrinking. Redwood also performs well due to its inherent resistance properties. Pressure-treated pine is engineered to withstand rot and insect damage but may require regular maintenance such as staining or sealing to protect against weather-related wear.
Maintenance levels vary among different types of wood. Cedar requires occasional cleaning and may need a protective finish every few years to maintain its appearance and durability. Redwood needs similar care but might stay in good condition longer if initially sealed correctly. Pressure-treated pine requires periodic inspection for signs of wear or damage; it benefits from routine applications of stain or sealant to preserve its integrity against the elements common in Crum Lynne’s climate. Regular checks for loose nails or boards are also recommended regardless of the type of wood chosen.
